Obituary: Another Old Settler Gone

Francis Nichols, an aged man who had been a farmer in Smith County, for many years before he became an invalid, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Carl Williams, on July 9, 1937.

Francis Albert Nichols, son of Peter and Mary Nichols, was born at Montezuma, Iowa, March 18, 1856, and departed this life July 9, 1937, at Smith Center, Kansas at the age of 81 years, 3 months and 21 days. He was married to Nettie Buck in July 1877, at Concordia, Kansas. They would have been married 60 years had he lived until July 22.

To this union were born 12 children: Minnie Johns, Arthur and Burl Nichols of Emmett, Idaho; Ollie Grothaus, Blue Springs, Nebraska; Clarence and John Nichols, Elgin, Nebraska; Lillie McBride, Ravenwood, Missouri; Amy Roath, Topeka; Lula Gardner, Ensign and Alma Williams, Smith Center. One daughter, Eva Baker and baby son preceded him in death. He also leaves, 45 grandchildren, 31 great grandchildren, five sisters and one brother.

He moved to this county 49 years ago and located nine miles northwest of Smith Center and lived there until his health failed nine years ago; afterwards living among his children until he passed away.

The funeral was held Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Simmons Rice Funeral Home in Smith Center with Reverend Kenneth Walton of the Pleasant Hill church near Thornburg in charge. Interment was made at Fairview Cemetery.

The children of Francis Nichols, who were present Sunday for his funeral, from a distance were: Mrs. Ollie Grothaus of Blue Springs, Nebraska, Mrs. Lula Gardner of Ensign, Nebraska and Mrs. Glenn Roath of Topeka.
