Alexander E. Abend, city engineer of East St. Louis, took his own life Wednesday evening at his home in East St. Louis. The deed was committed with a revolver, and is the direct result of overwork and the terrible heat of the past few days, which prevented him from sleeping at night. He had been working unusually hard upon plats for the reconstruction of Summit avenue. He showed his fatigue, and complained of his inability to sleep.

Wednesday afternoon he went home about 3 o'clock. His wife and child were away. He told the servant he was feeling badly, and would lie down for a while. When she went to arouse him for supper she found him dead on the bed.

He was a son of Hon. Edward Abend, President of the Belleville Savings Bank.

He leaves a wife and a son aged 11 years, who are visiting relatives at Belleville, and knew nothing of the affair until a message was forwarded to them several hours after the tragedy.

Mr. Abend was made City Surveyor by Mayor Stephens and was reappointed by Mayor Bader during his term. He was a member of the Knights of Honor and Modern Woodmen. He was just completing a handsome new residence at Eighth street and Baugh avenue.

The funeral will take place at 2:30 p.m. Friday.
