Ocala - He was a proud American, a true Southern Gentleman and a tender, loving man. Albert Stuart Magruder, a member of the "Greatest Generation," died on Thursday, March 27, 2014, at the age of 93, surrounded by his loving family at Hospice Sylvia House.
He was born at home on January 5, 1921, in Coconut Grove, Florida, to pioneer parents Ralph and Martha Magruder. After attending Marion Military Institute in Marion, Alabama, he joined the Army Air Corps to serve in World War II for four years as a Flight Engineer aboard his beloved B-25s in the European Theater. Following the war he returned home to Coconut Grove where he operated Magruder Pump and Supply; also working at University of Miami's Construction Research Laboratory.
In 1975, he and his wife moved to Ocala and were active in real estate with Ellison Realty until retiring. A man with a heart for animals, he was kind, thoughtful and quick to spread laughter with a ready joke or quip. He loved music, dancing, sports, history and playing cards with family and friends. As a member of First Presbyterian Church, he leaves behind many wonderful loving and thoughtful friends and will be sadly missed.
He is predeceased by his parents, Ralph and Martha; sister Martha; two brothers, Joseph and Ralph; and his beloved son-in-law, Kenneth Lewis, M.D. He is survived by his loving wife of nearly 68 years, Ginnie; three daughters: Patricia Hill (Freddie), Ocala; Linda Lewis, Jacksonville; Cynthia Nederlanden (Alan), Pompano; his younger brother, Ellison Magruder of North Carolina; eight grandchildren: Katherine, Robert, Amy, Matthew, Patrick, Kelyn, Brianna, and Jessica; along with eight great-grandchildren, Rebekah, Corey, Bethany, Alexis, Leah, Kinley, Ava, and Maria.
In lieu of flowers, please consider Al's devotion to animal causes. He will be remembered by his life of integrity, hard work and devotion to family and he will be greatly missed. A celebration of his life will be held at First Presbyterian Church on Saturday, May 17th at 2 p.m.
