Douglas Henry Meakin, 92, of 240 West Locust Drive, Beckley, West Virginia, died Monday, February 13 at 9:30 p.m. in a Beckley Veterans Administration Hospital following a long illness.

Born April 1, 1896, Ilkeston, Basford District, Counties of Derby and Nottingham, England he was the son of the late Joseph William and Annie Kelly Meakin.

Mr. Meakin came to the United States entering at Ellis Island on 11 January 1913 at the age of 16, and settled in Raleigh County. He became a naturalized citizen 9 July 1918 during enlistment into the U.S. Army Infantry at Camp Lee, Virginia and served during World War I, where he was wounded in action in France. He married Frances in the First Christian Church on 27 June 1920.

He attended West Virginia University, held a degree in engineering, was a Professional Engineer and was chief engineer for Eastern Gas and Fuel and Westmoreland Coal Company retiring in 1968.

Mr. Meakin was a very active member of the First Christian Church, Courthouse Square in Beckley, where he was an elder emeritus, choir member and a church musician for more than 60 years and was a member of the Society of Professional Engineers, American Legion and Beckley Elks Choraleris.

He was preceded in death by a sister Annie Mary Hiatt.

Survivors include his wife, Sarah Frances Hurt Meakin; a daughter, Mrs. Virgil (Louise) Horton of Beckley; a son, William Douglas (Bill) Meakin of New Philadelphia, Ohio; a brother, Joseph W. Meakin of Indianapolis, Indiana; five grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

Services will be Thursday at 1 p.m. at the Melton Mortuary Chapel in Beckley with the Reverend Russell F. Smith officiating. Burial wil be in the Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens at Prosperity.

Friends may call today from 6 to 9 p.m.

Pallbearers will be Grover St. Clair, John Rogar, Carl Cook, Bill File, Jr., John Welsh, David Mullins, Robert Hollandsworth and Eugene Hancock.
