Bob emigrated from Ilkeston, Derbyshire on 20 September 1913 through the port at Liverpool, England and entered the United States at Ellis Island, New York on 26 September 1913 with his mother, Ann Kelly Meakin and brother-in-law and sister, Frances "Frank" Douglas and Annie Mary Meakin Chrich. His father and brother, Joseph William and Douglas Henry Meakin entered the United States before the rest of the family on 18 January 1913. The family moved to Riley, Raleigh County, West Virginia and began working in the coal mines. Later part of the family moved to Indiana. Bob and his wife, Carrie moved to Indianapolis where he worked and retired from the water utilities department. His parents, Joseph & Ann moved to Ladoga, Indiana and later to Indianapolis, Indiana.
Bob married his Caroline J Hurt on 8 May 1922 in Gallia County, Ohio. They never had children of their own, but they raised a child, Donovan Russell, who was their nephew. Donovan was born to George S and Emilie Hurt Russell. Emilie died 6 days after his birth. She had a heart condition that was aggravated by her pregnancy, and which also caused Donovan to be born prematurely.
