Mary Louise Meakin Horton, 79 formerly of Beckley, passed away at her home on Thursday, April 1, 2004.

Born January 15, 1925, at Stanaford, she was the daughter of the late Douglas Henry and Sarah Francis Hurt Meakin.

Mrs. Horton was a 1942 graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School and attended Indiana University and graduated as a Registered Nurse from the Methodist Hospital School of Nursing in Indianapolis, Indiana.

She worked in a variety of nursing positions during her career and joined the Beckley Veterans Administration Hospital in 1970, where she opened and managed the first renal dialysis unit in the area until her retirement in 1985. She moved to Englewood, Florida in 1991 and enjoyed traveling.

Mrs. Horton was a lifelong member of the First Christian Church located at Courthouse Square, where she married Virgil 18 August 1949, and also attended the Englewood United Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by a brother, William "Bill" Meakin of New Philadelphia, Ohio and Vero Beach, Florida.

Those left to cherish her memory are her husband of 54 years, William Virgil Horton; two daughters, Kathy Lane of Richmond, Virginia, and Nancy Gillispie and her husband, Tom of Cape Coral, Florida; a son, Keith Horton and his wife, Ann of Kingsport, Tennessee; six grandchildren, Todd and Jeremy Horton, Alex and Kristin Lane, and Matthew and Nicholas Gillispie and two stepgrandchildren, Laura and Stacy Bays.

A memorial service will be held for friends and family at the Dome Chapel at the Englewood United Methodist Church on Sunday at 2 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the First Christian Church, PO Box 1305, Beckley, WV 25801.

Gravesite Details

My mother died in her home in Englewood, which was actually located in Charlotte County, not Sarasota County. (FAG glitch). Ashes interred in the Love Section of the Garden of Memories, where her husband, Virgil's were later interred.
