"A Virginia Gentleman" Born in Roanoke, Virginia to parents Duvall C. Balochie, Sr. and Georgina Louisa Grant, he learned the meaning and value of hard work as a boy working in his father's store in the Roanoke Farmer's Market, and later in "Balochie's Market" after school and on Saturdays(closed Sundays!).
After graduating from Jefferson High School and four years at Virginia Tech, he served in the United States Army for three years learning missile systems electronics, maintenance and repair. After the army he worked for Douglas Aircraft Co. as a field service engineer maintaining Nike Ajax missile batteries that protected Philadelphia, Baltimore and other major cities on the East Coast.
He later accepted a position with Lockheed Missiles and Space Company in Sunnyvale, California in 1962, where he worked the better part of his career in the Fleet Ballistic Missiles division in support of the Polaris, Poseidon, and Trident programs. "D.C.", as he was known to his friends and colleagues, enjoyed many happy years at work in their company and fellowship. He spent his entire career as a quiet, steadfast cold warrior in the defense of our nation and the freedoms that we all hold so dear.
Retired from Lockheed in January, 1990, he joined his lifelong wife and companion Deloris as co-administrators in the construction and running of Magnolia Inn residential care facility for the elderly in Sunnyvale on South Bernardo Avenue, caring for 18-20 residents. Constructed and opened in 1987, Magnolia Inn was sold in 1998. Duvall and family enjoyed many blessed years attending the First Baptist Church of Los Altos and enjoying the company of many friends.
In 2005 he moved to Hollister, California to be near family and his grandchildren, Evan Duvall and Madelyn Taiping, who were his joy. Evan and Madelyn will miss their grandfather greatly, but they will remember their "Papa" and his kind presence in their lives, picking them up from school, taking them on special vacations, weekend breakfasts, and attendance and support at their many activities.
In retirement Duvall enjoyed happy times with Deloris on cruises, attending plays music, shows, and tours, and most years vacationing in Virginia in Roanoke and near Smith Mountain Lake, reconnecting with his extended family and old friends. Lifelong pleasures included boating and fishing, gardening, beekeeping, and many different hobbies. He was a man who could build and/or fix almost anything.
Duvall is survived by Deloris Marie Boone, his wife and loving partner of 61 years. Never was a couple so happy and hard-working in marriage and life together. Their example of love and commitment is one of their greatest enduring legacies to our family. Duvall promised to marry Deloris when they were but children, "even if she didn't drink her milk and all her teeth fell out…..". A wonderful family man, gentle and patient, he is also survived by his two sons Eric Duvall and Grant Alan, who will miss him tremendously, but will also cherish the many happy times spent together in YMCA Indian Guides, and as their coach as they played AYSO soccer, and on various, frequent family vacations. His example as an unassuming, and loving father shall always be enshrined in the hearts and minds of his sons and grandchildren.
Duvall is also survived by his daughter-in-law, Dorothy who will remember him as an example of the best in a man, father, and grandfather with a big, warm and giving heart that will be forever treasured; sister, Norma Hawkins and her devoted husband, Chester Hawkins; his loving nephews Ronald and David(Bruce); and Randall, who preceeded him in death; Sonia, loving wife of Ronald; Diana, kind wife of Randall, and grand-nephew Brian. Also surviving are Duvall's brother-in-law and friend, Horace Smith, and his kind and helpful sister-in-law, Carolyn Isabel; brother-in-law Daniel Edward Boone, also D.C.'s lifelong friend and helper, and Daniel's wife Joann, "one of the nicest people I've ever known….." he often said….Nephews and nieces Andrew Smith, Carl and Rebecca Swanson, and Vernon and Julie Smith; Daniel Edward Boone, Jr. and wife Rebecca, and Jobyl Anne Boone and friends Henry S. Cruz, (who preceeded him in death), and his loving wife Hiromi Cruz. He will also be missed by his longtime friends, Gunnar and Judy Moore, and by friends Tom Cole and Lucy(predeceased).
This we believe: Never did a more decent, kind, or hard-working man live in this world. Duvall and all his goodness shall forever give our family strength and encourage us to forever be good to each other. He is no longer here, but now resides in Heaven with our God, having believed and cherished the words and promises of our Lord Jesus Christ all the days of his life.
Memorial Services will be held at the Cusimano Family Colonial Mortuary, 96 W. El Camino Real, Mtn.View, Thurs.,March 6th at 11 a.m. Private interment at Gavilan Hills Cemetary in Gilroy, CA.
