A Trigg County native, Elmo was born December 6, 1913, the seventh of ten children of Warren C. "Teen" and Lola Valley Stephens Hendricks. He was raised on the Hendricks' homeplace in the Mershon Bridge Community of Trigg County, Kentucky. On May 23, 1936 Elmo was married to Myrtle Rhea Bridges, daughter of Mount Vernon and Dannie Noel Bridges of the Beechy Fork area of Maple Grove. Elmo and Rhea first made their home with his sister and brother-inLaw, Lula and Lacy Peal, near the mouth of Little River. When the Flood of 1937 came, floodwaters rose to the second floor of their house forcing them to flee. Afterwards, Elmo and Rhea moved to the Hendricks' homeplace and later to Cadiz. There he worked in logging and sawmilling with his father-in-law and his sons. In the late 1940s, Elmo along with several other went to Detroit, Michigan to work laying blocks for new houses for soldiers returning from war. In 1950, Elmo and the family moved to Paducah, Ky. where he became an electrician. Elmo then moved his family back to Cadiz in 1960 where he worked as a sawyer at several sawmills until he retired.

Elmo and Rhea had six children: Marian June, Jane Carol, W.C., Peggy Ann, Vernon Ray and Connie Lane.

Elmo died April 16, 1984 of an apparent heart attack. He was buried in the Little River Cemetery.
