James was an original enrollee of the Choctaw Nation. His grandfather, [Tushpa] John Culberson, was a full-blood Choctaw who came over the Trail of Tears at age 12, losing both his father and his mother along the journey.

James Matthew Culberson, Sr., 93, an original enrollee, died in Asheboro, North Carolina on August 27. He was born to James and Martha Harris Culberson in Leflore, Indian Territory in 1901. Mr. Culberson grew up in Durant where his father was a court interpreter for the Choctaws. His paternal grandfather, Tushpa, whose name was changed to John Culberson during his service in the Choctaw Regiment of the Confederate Army, came to Indian Territory on the Trail of Tears in the 1830s.

Mr. Culberson graduated from Southwestern College, Clarksville, Tennessee, now known as Rhodes College, Memphis, Tennessee and received his M.S. from Columbia University.

After teaching and coaching in several places in the Midwest and a short time at Southeastern State, Mr. Culberson became athletic director in Portsmouth, N.H. and remained in that community until retiring to Asheboro, N.C. eleven years ago.

His son, J. Thomas, preceded him in death in 1990. His survivors include his wife, Sara McReynolds Culberson and son, James, Jr. of Asheboro; a daughter Helen Culberson Johnson of Liverpool, New York; a sister, Ruth Culberson Robertson of Ardmore, Oklahoma; nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

ASHEBORO - James Matthew Culberson, Sr., 93, of 1320 Old Cox Road died Saturday, August 27, 1994, at Mountain View Care Center.

Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Pugh Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. J.C. Grose, Jr. officiating. Burial will be in Oaklawn Cemetery.

A native of LeFlore, Oklahoma, Mr. Culberson was formerly of Rye Beach, New Hampshire. He was a member of the First Methodist Church in Asheboro. He was a graduate of Rhodes College in Memphis, Tenn. and received a Master's Degree from Columbia University. He was a former coach and athletic director in various public school systems. Mr. Culberson was a past President of Rotary, a Paul Harris Fellow, and an ardent fisherman and hunter. He was predeceased by a son, J. Thomas Culberson.

Surviving are wife, Mrs. Sarah McReynolds Culberson of the home; daughter, Helen Culberson Johnson of Liverpool, N.Y.; son, James M. Culberson, Jr. of Asheboro; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and sister, Mrs. Ruth C. Robertson of Ardmore, Oklahoma.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Asheboro Public Library, Asheboro or the First United Methodist Church, 224 N. Fayetteville St., Asheboro.
