Mass of Christian Burial for Leona Sogge, 73, of Minnewaukan was held Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at St. James Catholic Church in Minnewaukan. Interment was in the church cemetery. She died July 21, 2004 at the Heartland Care Center in Devils Lake.
Fr. Matt Lanz was celebrant. Rhonda Howard and Rita Halvorson were vocalists and Deanna Hanson was organist. Casket bearers were Bradley, Anthony & Andrew Sogge, Nick Streifel, Ed Gefroh and Josh Butters. The Nelson Funeral Home of Minnewaukan was in charge of arrangements.
Leona Marie Streifel was born April 21, 1931 in Pierce County to Nicholas and Catherine Grossman Streifel. She attended school in Minnewaukan, graduating in 1950. On May 21, 1951 she married Floyd Sogge in Minnewaukan. They lived and farmed with Floyd's father, Alfred, until 1964 when they purchased Leona's parents' farm near Minnewaukan. She was a caretaker for a friend for many years and also cooked at the Minnewaukan School until retiring in 2000. He died March 16, 1990. She entered the Heartland Care Center at Devils Lake in June of this year.
She was a member of St. James Catholic Church and was active in its Altar Society. she was also a member of the Gunnerud-Dietrich American Legion Auxiliary and the Minnewaukan Community Club. She enjoyed cooking, baking, crafting, reading and playing cards.
Survivors include three daughters, Susan (Robert) Martinez of Farmington, NM, Ginger (Phil) Solum of Lake Park, Minn. and Mary Jo Sogge of Bismarck; four sons, Randy (Deanne) Sogge of Devils Lake, John (Marilyn) Sogge of Penn, James Sogge of Excelsior Springs, Mo. and Kurt Sogge of Minnewaukan; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; three brothers, Paul (Irene) Streifel of Minnewaukan, Harold (Carolyn) Streifel of West Fargo and George (Ginny) Streifel of Devils Lake; and three sisters, Helen (Mrs. Loren) Bogan of Montevideo, Minn., Caroline (Mrs. Byron) Butters of Andover, Minn. and Mavis (Mrs. Dale) Halvorson of Minnewaukan; four sisters-in-law, Solveig Hvinden of Maddock, Mavis (James) Johnson of Heimdal, Eloyce (Gene) Gaffney of Detroit Lakes, Minn. and Donna Sogge of Leeds; and three brothers-in-law, Gordon (Darlene) Sogge of Northwood, Lee (Myrna) Sogge of Tucson, Ariz. and Rodger (Alice) Sogge of Minnewaukan.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and a grandson, Wayne Martinez Jr.
