Charles, the patriarch of the Cantonwine family, immigrated to America from Prussia in 1806, arriving in Philadelphia, Penn., aboard the ship Orlando. The ship's passenger list shows "Chr. Kuntentwine, single man." Eight or so years later, Charles married Mary Magdalena Scholl, daughter of Charles Jacob and Margaret (Fuhr) Scholl, in about 1814 in Bedford county, Pennsylvania.
On Dec. 12, 1867, at the age of 15, Catherine married Casper Stipp, 33, in Spring Valley, Lake Co., Colorado. A son, Charles, was born in 1868. In 1869, both Catherine and the baby died. Charles died of the croup in July, then Catherine of typhoid fever the following November.
