Mary Ann "Jane" Cantonwine Coon was the daughter of Jacob and Christena (Dilling) Cantonwine and the granddaughter of Charles and Mary Magdalena (Scholl) Cantonwine.

Charles, the patriarch of the Cantonwine family, immigrated to America from Prussia in 1806, arriving in Philadelphia, Penn., aboard the ship Orlando. The ship's passenger list shows "Chr. Kuntentwine, single man." Eight or so years later, Charles married Mary Magdalena Scholl, daughter of Charles Jacob and Margaret (Fuhr) Scholl, in about 1814 in Bedford county, Pennsylvania.

Mary Ann married John Dennis Coon on November 4, 1866 in Lake County, Colorado. They had four children, two sons who died in infancy and two daughters, Lizzie Lavina (m. Joseph Donley), and Winniebelle (m. Amos Ayres/Ayers). They also adopted Cora (m. William Banning). Mary Ann died at the age of 37. Five years later John married Ione Dilla (Baker).
