His obituary reads as follows:

"Dan. J. Hirstein, son of John and the late Mrs. Katherine Baer Hirstein, was born December 13, 1893, and died on December 22, 1942. While he was young his parents moved to a farm about three and one-half miles southeast of Trenton, IIlinois. In 1919 he married Frieda Berger, his now bereaved widow. Their children Ethel, Edith, and Gerald, were injured in the accident which caused the death of their father. He was a farmer. In early youth he became a member of the Mennonite Church, Summerfield, Illinois. He served as deacon for a number of years and was assistant Sunday school superintendent. He is survived by his aged father; two brothers, Sam who resides on a farm southeast of Trenton and Edward of Galconda, Illinois, and one sister, Mrs. G. W. Ruth of Summerfield."
