Donald Edward Shawn was born 24 December 1930 in Cedar Grove Township, Comanche County, Oklahoma, to Oscar Ellis Shawn and Georgia Evelyn Lockaby Shawn.

Donald was predeceased by his parents, six siblings and his daughter Vicki Dawn Shawn. Donald was survived by his wife of sixty-two years, a daughter, three grandchildren, one great-grandson, a son-in-law,a grandson-in-law, brother, two sister-in-laws, and many nieces and nephews.

At the age of sixteen, Donald joined the Marine Corps and retired after serving twenty years. He was a combat Marine, having served in the Korean War, where he was awarded the Purple Heart after being wounded in an ambush attack. Two fellow Marines saved his life by dragging him through rice paddies to a field hospital. He also served in VietNam.

Donald married Darlene, his wife on 2 July 1955, and two wonderful daughters were born to them at Camp Pendleton, California. After he retired from the Marine Corps, he wanted to move back to Oklahoma so he could drive down a road that didn't have any traffic. He lived in Norman for almost forty-five years, where he enjoyed watching football games and being an avid bird watcher.

He passed away on 5 March 2018, at the age of 87. He was a 100% disabled veteran since 1991, due to hearing loss, but his health worsened the last few year. His wife was his caregiver and with the help of his Veterans Home Base Team was able to keep him home until his death.

He was buried on 10 March 2018, next to his daughter Vicki who passed away in 2013. His funeral was held at Hilltop Baptist Church, where he and his wife were members for many years. His service include a military honor guard of six Marines and one Sailor (played taps), with burial at Sunset Memorial Cemetery.
