Jim Daniel Russell, also known as Jimmie, was born on May 27, 1943 in Weslaco, TX to Jessie Daniel Russell and Celia Yhona (Boles) Russell and passed away January 1st, 2014 in Rockwall, TX. Jimmie is survived by his wife Margaret (Peggi) Elizabeth Russell; Daughter, Andrea Lynn and son-in-law Joey Wrape of Rowlett, TX; son, Jonathan David and daughter-in-law Shar Russell of Wichita Falls, TX; five grandchildren; Trey Wrape, Darian Russell, Jordyn Wrape, Jayce Russell, and Shaila Russell; his brother, Jesse and sister-in-law Louella Russell of Weslaco, TX, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

After Attending Weslaco schools Jimmie served in the United States Navy as a member of the Navy Band from 1961-1964. He was stationed in Washington, D.C. and in the 6th Fleet where he was part of President Eisenhower's People-To-People program. He also marched in President Kennedy's funeral procession playing snare drum.

Jimmie attended Delmar College and then transferred to North Texas State University where he received his Bachelors Degree in Music Education. He was a member of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Music Honor Fraternity. While in college he met his beautiful bride of 48 years Peggi. After graduating North Texas, he went on to get his Masters of Science in Music Education from Texas A&I. During the summer of 1968 to help support his family he played in the Southern Palace live band at Six Flags over Texas.

He dedicated his life to thousands of high school students as a director of bands for 36 years. As a high school band director he served LaGrange High School, LaGrange, TX; Marble Falls High School, Marble Falls, TX; Robinson High School, Waco, TX; Duncan High School, Duncan, OK; Liberal High School, Liberal, KS; LaVega High School, Waco, TX; Madisonville High School, Madisonville, TX; Moody High School, Corpus Christi, TX. He was also chosen to lead the Texas State Lions Club Band to Atlanta, Georgia in 1982 and Honolulu, Hawaii, 1983.

Jimmie was more than a "teacher" to students. He was known to be a mentor and a "second dad". Over the past few weeks and months his family has been sent videos, letters, calls and visits from decades of past students reminding them of what it means to be more than a teacher, a friend and confident.

Jimmie served as a deacon and an elder to Windsor Park (now know as Kings Crossing) Church of Christ in Corpus Christi, Texas. He attended Bandina Christian Camp and Leadership Training for Christ for many years. He did this for his love of teenagers.

Over the past few years, Jimmie's diabetes began to take a toll on him. He and Peggi moved to Dallas to be closer to family and give support to Peggi to take care of him. Jimmie had a full life with God, family, teaching and especially love.

I thank you for the music
And your stories of the road
I thank you for the freedom
When it came my time to go
I thank you for the kindness
And the times when you got tough
And, papa, I don't think I
Said 'I love you' near enough

I am a living legacy to the leader of the band

Dan Fogelberg
