Alfred was one of nine victims of a plane crash in a potato patch, nine miles northeast of Presque Isle, Maine.

A U.S. Army B-26 bomber lost control and crashed into a field, striking a horse-drawn wagon, killing Alfred and three others, including his nine-year-old son Alfred, Jr., and all five airmen aboard.
