Services were held August 25 for Ronald Irwin Campbell, 74, at the United Methodist Church in Corning with the Rev. Richard Layman officiating.
Ronald Irwin Campbell was born September 10, 1917 south of Prescott in Adams County to Guy and Fern Pottinger Campbell. He died August 22, 1993 at Colonial Manor Nursing Home in Corning.
He graduated from Prescott High School in 1936. He married Berniece Hayes June 18, 1938, at the Methodist Parsonage in Corning. They were the parents of a daughter. He served with the 20th Armored Division in France, Germany, Belgium, Austria, and Luxenburg from April 1944 to April 1946. After he returned from service he was employed as butter maker at the Corning Creamery and in later years ran a cream route in rural Prescott, Nevinville, Nodway, and Villisca areas. After the creamery closed he worked for Nodaway Valley Food and Paul's Feed Store. He also was a bus driver for the Corning Schools.
As a young man he played catcher for the Prescott town team and later took up golfing. He and Beriece liked to travel and had seen a large part of the United States on their vacations.
He was preceded in death by his parents, step-father, John Cox; his wife in 1980; brothers Harold Campbell and another at birth; and a brother-in-law, Albert Cupp.
Survivors include a daughter, Kathlyn and husband Dan Schafer of Corning, sisters, Velma and husband Charles Simpson, Port Angeles, Washington, and Dorothy Cupp of Tabb, Virginina; two granddaughter and a grandson; four great-grandchildren; and sisters-in-law, Marguerite Campbell and Marjorie and husband Francis Wood of Corning, Jean and husband Don Shires of Prescott, and Janice and husband Robert Smart of Osceola.
Pall bearers were Sid Wood, Bobby Dunn, Dan Schafer, Scott Mattison, Richard Quimby, and Mark Schafer.
Honorary pall bearers were Dick Cook, Virgil Lee, Robert Smart, Francis Wood, Donald Shires, Otto Sunderson, Cleo Hawthorne, Keith Hadley, Dean Williams, Eldon Lowther, and Carl Lawrence.
Military rites were by Ourcq Post 117, Corning American Legion. Burial was at Evergreen Cemetery at Prescott.
A memorial has been established in his name.
