Joel Gomillion, age 80, died at his home Thursday, November 21, 2013, in Lockhart, Alabama, after a long battle with cancer. He was born January 1, 1933, in Walton County, Florida, to Isaiah and Adelia Courtney Gomillion. Joel graduated from Paxton High School in 1952. He joined the U.S. Army after graduation and proudly served his country. He returned home and worked in wood products for 45 years working for International Paper Company and Pope-Jones Pulpwood Company and founded Tri-County Timber Company.

Joel enjoyed the outdoors and was an avid hunter and fisherman and spent countless hours in the woods, lakes, and ponds of Walton County, Florida, and South Alabama. Joel loved fast-pitch softball, and the stories are endless of how talented a pitcher he was. He once pitched a perfect game in Germany in an all-Armed Forces Tournament.

Joel's biggest legacy, however, is the immeasurable mark he left on his wife, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Known to them as Joel, Daddy, and Paw Paw, he will forever hold a dear and precious place in each of their hearts.

Joel is preceded in death by his parents, Isaiah and Adelia Courtney Gomillion; two grandsons, Patrick Helms and Joshua Allen Martin; two brothers, James Gomillion, and Cecil Gomillion; and two sisters, Dora Mae Hobbs and Myrtice Kirkland.

Joel is survived by his wife of 36 years,
four daughters, one son, three grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, three sisters, and one brother.

Funeral: 10:00 am, Saturday, November 23, 2013, from Evans Funeral Home, with James Pickron, William Tucker Aplin, and Phil McMillion officiating.

Visitation Friday from 6-8 PM at Evans Funeral Home.

Interment at Greenwood Cemetery.
