WAVERLY -- Following her retirement at Citrus World, Mrs. Myrtice Gomillion Kirkland worked part-time as a hostess at Burger King on Cypress Gardens Blvd. in Winter Haven so she could be around people. "She felt better doing that instead of just sitting around the home. She got to know people," said her daughter, Brenda Henderson of Dothan, Ala. Mrs. Kirkland died of heart failure Tuesday (Feb. 4, 2003) at Winter Haven Hospital. She was 80. Born in Walton County on Sept. 13, 1922, she came to Waverly from Orlando in 1955. After working for Citrus World for 20 years, Mrs. Kirkland retired in 1988. She and her husband enjoyed traveling with the Polk County C.B. Club in their retirement. "They went camping a lot with the club," Henderson said. "They used to go to Ocala to the National Forest a lot." Mrs. Kirkland was known for her generosity, often helping people with their yardwork or cooking for them. "She loved being with people and she would always put people before herself," Henderson said. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Waverly. In addition to her daughter, Mrs. Kirkland is survived by her husband of more than 60 years, Cecil H. Kirkland; daughters, Barbara Horak, Auburndale, Lynn Marston, Kissimmee, Phyllis Allen, Waverly, Ruby Wells, Lakeland; son, Henry Kirkland, Mulberry; sisters, Mae Sauls and Lucy Hickox, both of Fernandina Beach, Dora Mae Hobbs, DeFuniak Springs, Rhojean Smith, Crestview; brothers, Joel Gomillion, Lockhart, Ala., Carl Wayne Gomillion, Milton; 13 grandchildren; 25 greatgrandchildren.
