SOUTH BEND — James Paul Grenert, 88, formerly of 426 N. Notre Dame Ave., died at 7:55 a.m Wednesday in Regency Place after an illness.

Mr Grenert retired in 1977 from South Bend Lathe and was formerly employed by Studebaker Corp.

He was born Dec. 7, 1904, in South Bend and was a lifelong area resident. On May 15, 1926, in LaPorte County, he married Bertha Knope.

She survives with two daughters, Paula Molnar of South Bend and Neva Wangberg of Mulvane, Kan.; a son. James of Mishawaka; nine grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and a brother, Robert L. of St. Joseph. A daughter, Delores Harris, died in Jan., I993.

He was a member of Masonic Lodge 45, St. Joseph IOOF Robert Blum Lodge, and South Bend Maennerchor.

Services will be at noon Saturday in Forest G. Hay Funeral Home, 435 S. Ironwood Drive. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday in the funeral home, where a Masonic service will be at 7 p.m.
