George Alma Byrum
EDENTON - George Alma Byrum, 83, formerly of the 900 block of Old Ferry Road, died Wednesday, Nov. 19, 2008 in the Skilled Nursing Facility of Chowan Hospital. Mr. Byrum was a lifelong resident of Edenton and was the son of the late Thomas Campbell and Lillian Forehand Byrum. A graduate of Edenton High School in 1942, he received the distinguished Rotary Cup Award for outstanding seniors. He attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and graduated in December of 1949 with a B.S. degree in Commerce and was a member of the Sigma Nu Fraternity. After graduating from college, he joined the family business, Byrum Hardware Company, and served as its president until his death. Mr. Byrum was a faithful member of Edenton Baptist Church, had served for many years as chairman of the local board of trustees of Nations Bank, now Bank of America, served as president of both the Edenton Chamber of Commerce and Edenton Junior Chamber of Commerce, had served as chairman of the Edenton Historic Commission, president of the Barker House Association, chairman of the Chowan Hospital's board of trustees, was a member and past president of the Edenton Jaycees, and a member of the Edenton Rotary Club for more than 50 years, filling many roles including service as president. A member of the Edenton Town Council for 16 years, he served as mayor for four years. Mr. Byrum believed in lifelong civic service. Through his strong leadership, the Barker House was relocated from downtown to its present location on the waterfront. He also orchestrated the state purchase of the Ziegler House, where it stands to this day as the Edenton Visitors Center. He was recognized as Edenton's Man of the Year and received the Jaycees Distinguished Service Award in 1961. Mr. Byrum served in the 297th Infantry of the 100th Division and served in France and Germany during World War II. His wife, Imogene Moses Byrum, predeceased him Oct. 2, 2008. He is survived by his two daughters, Jean B. Brown and husband, Steve and their sons, Steven and Campbell, and June B. Proctor and her husband, Wayne, and their son, Stuart and daughter, Sarah, all of Edenton. A funeral will be Sunday at 2 p.m. in Edenton Baptist Church by the Rev. David Brooks. Burial will follow in Beaver Hill Cemetery. Friends may join the family Saturday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in Miller Funeral Home & Crematory, 735 Virginia Road, and all other times at the home of his daughter, Jean, 201 Oak Hill Drive, Edenton. Memorial contributions may be made to the Edenton Baptist Church Memorial Fund, 200 S. Granville St., Edenton, NC 27932.
