Tyrone Daily Herald (Tyrone, PA) Oct. 38, 1916:

The. venerable Peter A. Reed, one of Tyrone's oldest and most respected citizens and business men, died at his home, 1109 Logan avenue, at 7:45 o'-clock this morning. Mr. Reed had been in declining health for some time had not been subjected to any alarming illness. About a week ago he contracted a severe cold, and for the past three days he had been obliged to remain indoors. His illness brought about an exhaustion which culminated, when at the hour stated he quietly slept away.

Peter Andrew Reed was the son of Michael and Elizabeth Reed, both deceased, and was born at Schellsburg, Bedford county, September 23, 1835, his age at death being 81 years, one month and five days. He spent his boyhood on his father's farm and received his education in the Bedford county schools. Then, as a young man, he went to Philadelphia where he accepted a clerkship in a store, beginning a mercantile experience which he followed during many of the remaining years of his long life. He left Philadelphia to join his brother in conducting a store at McConnelsburg. From here he went to Kansas where he was identified with the lumber business for nine years, learning it so thoroughly that he was well equipped to form with his brothers the firm of Reed Brothers at Houtzdale, a firm which operated nine sawmills and conducted, an extensive lumber business.

For the firm of Reed Brothers he came to Tyrone and he represented them here for two years, afterward going to Pittsburgh in behalf of the firm. Then he returned to Kansas, where he engaged in the lumber business for four years. Coming back to Tyrone he entered upon a residence here which continued during the remainder of his life. He gave his attention for a year to the business of Reed Bros, here, and then entered the large store of E. L. Study, later becoming a partner in the Study store. Then he took charge of the interests of Mr. Study, his father-in-law, in the ore mines at Shoenberger, remaining: there until 1886, when he was appointed by President Grover Cleveland to be post master at Tyrone. He filled this office acceptably during the term of four years, and afterward embarked in the grocery business, soon giving up the latter to take up the agency of some of the leading insurance companies. In the insurance field he was successful and his agency continued as a business factor of Tyrone during the ensuing years until the present time.

On June 25, 1867, Mr. Reed was united in marriage with Alverda Frances Study, of Tyrone. She survives him, along with one son, J. William Reed, of Germantown, and one daughter, Miss Carrie Reed, of Tyrone. He was the last of a family of ten children, leaving no brothers nor sisters to survive him. The deceased was a devoted member of the Presbyterian church, and both at Osceola and at Marysville. Kansas, he had served in the honored capacity as an elder in the church. - At the services of the church and the Sunday school of the First Presbyterian church, of Tyrone he was one of the most dependable attendants, and his life was in the sweetest conformity to his religious beliefs.
Mr. Reed was a man of much modesty, but he was rock-ribbed in essential beliefs, his quiet but pure life being an example of goodness which might well be followed by generations after him.

The deceased was an honored member ot the Masonic fraternity which he joined at Bedford, September 18, 1861. The fiftieth anniversary of his initiation as a member of this craft was a, noteworthy observance in Tyrone, September 18, 1911. Since coming to Tyrone he had affiliated with Tyrone lodge No. 494, F. and A. M, and at the time of his death he was the tyler of the lodge, his last official work in this office being on the occasion of the laying, of the cornerstone of the Municipal building a few days ago.

Funeral services at the late home of the deceased. 1109 Logan avenue, will be held at 3 o'clock, Monday afternoon, in charge of his pastor, Rev. Herbert W. Bieber D. D., of the First Presbyterian church. The burial ceremonies will be in charge of the Tyrone Masonic lodge. Interment in Grand View cemetery.
