Coumbus Bancroft served in the Union Army during the Civil War, enlisting at Dixfield, Maine, where he resided, on 24 July 1862. He was a farmer, age 28, born at Plainfield, Vermont, married, and enlisted for 3 years. He mustered on 14 Aug 1862 at Augusta, Maine. He was a Private in Co B (veteran cemetery record says Co D), 16th REGT Maine Vols. He is described as being 5' 8" tall with dark complexion and dark eyes and hair. He was taken prisoner on 1 July 1863; there is no date of death as he died while being held.

Columbus married Arabella C Warren at Dixfield, Maine on 12 October 1861. They were the parents of two known children.
