PIONEER GOES TO HIS REWARD
NELS ANTHON MADSON FUNERAL SATURDAY – PASSED APRIL 13

The Grim Reaper once more has taken his toll among our Morris folks, this time to remove from the midst of loved ones and friends, our elderly neighbor, Nels Anthon Madson, pioneer farmer and homesteader.

Mr. Madson had been in his usual good health until about a week before his death. Then he was taken ill but was confined to his bed but two days. Bright's disease was ascribed as the cause of his demise.

Nels Anthon Madson was born Oct. 11, 1857 in Manitowoc, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Gunar Madson and was therefore at the time of his death 80 years, 6 months and 3 days old. He came to the Town of Morris as a young man.

October 21, 1891, he was united in the bonds of holy matrimony to Miss Bertha Olson by the Rev. Homme, and the young fulks immediately started housekeeping on the farm which has been their home during the forty-seven years since. This beloved companion now survives together with the three children who blessed this union, two sons and one daughter, as follows: Arthur Madson, Meadowlands, Minn.; Forrest Madson, Monico, Wis., and Mrs. Anthony Hoffman, on the home farm. One brother, M. G. Madson of Manitowoc, and one sister, Mrs. Melvin Simpson, of the town of Morris, also mourn his loss. There are nine grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon, April 16, from the East Immanuel Church, Morris, of which he was a member. Rev. Lillehei brought a comforting message to the sorrowing loved ones.

Interment took place in the church cemetery. Pall bearers were Oscar Holm, Tom Larson, Peter Frederickson, Oscar Petterson, Oliver Gjermundson, and Fred Boldig.

Among the out-of-town attendants at the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Walter Madson, Mrs. Baruth, Miss Margaret Anderson, Mrs. Theo. Anderson, all of Manitowoc; Mr. and Mrs. August Olson, Harshaw, Wis.; Mr. and Mrs. Charles Olson, Three Lakes; Mrs. Ben Rudtke, and Mr. and Mrs. Pete Bruhan, of Clintonville.

The life of Mr. Madson is an interesting one as it passes in review. Coming to the town of Morris when but 17 years of age, he soon found plenty to keep him busy. Lumbering was then the chief business of this community. One of the first saw mills in Morris was built in 1885 by Mr. Madson in partnership with Mr. Berg. It was built on the farm which Mr. Madson took as a homestead.

Mr. Madson was a fine home-loving husband and father and a kindly neighbor and friend. He was one of the founders of East Immanuel Church and has always been greatly interested in its welfare. His passing helps to mark, slowly but surely, the time when there will be no more of the first settlers in the Town of Morris.

We extend our sympathy to the mourning loved ones of Nels Anthon Madson.
