James Allen Gallaher interrupted his college education to muster into the Army during the Civil War at Camp Butler, IL. He was at the head of his class at Illinois College when he enlisted. His troop, the 68th regiment of Illinois volunteers, was sent to protect Washington, D.C., then to Alexandria, VA, where he contracted and unfortunately died of a virulent strain of typhoid fever. Originally buried in Pisgah Cemetery, his remains were moved to Diamond Grove Cemetery and reburied on August 9, 1873.
