The funeral service for William (Bill) VanBruggen, 84, Valley City, North Dakota formerly of rural Marion, North Dakota was held Monday, August 4, 1997 at North Marion Reformed Church, Marion with Rev. Mike VanHamersveld officiating. Burial was at North Marion Reformed Cemetery. He died Wednesday, July 30 at the Sheyenne Care Center in Valley City.
William VanBruggen was born May 5, 1913 near Litchville, North Dakota, the son of Gerrit and Henrietta (Kamphoff) VanBruggen. He moved with his family to a farm northwest of Marion and received his education at the Greenland and Manns Township schools.
He married Mary Bremer March 7, 1940 near Marion. They farmed north of Marion until 1988 when they moved to Valley City. He entered the Sheyenne Care Center in October, 1995.
Mr. VanBruggen was a member of the North Marion Reformed Church where he was actively involved serving on the consistory and teaching Sunday School. He also served on the Greenland Township school board for several years.
He is survived by his wife, Mary; one son, Clarence (Sharon), Marion; three daughters, Henrietta (Costi) Baramki, Huntington Beach, California; Sylvia (George) Free, boulder, Colorado; Esther (Edwin) Johnson, Tiskilwa, Illinois; two sisters, Gertrude Boom, Marion; Aleida Miedema, Valley City, and ten grandchildren.
Mr. VanBruggen was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, and one sister.
