James Gallaher Russel was a lifelong minister in the Presbyterian Church, serving in Illinois, Wisconsin, Nebraska, and Iowa. He was the clerk of the Hastings Presbytery in Nebraska and represented his Presbytery three times in General Assembly. He retired from the ministry in 1935, and returned in 1942 to live the remainder of his life in Jacksonville, IL, his childhood home. James died at his residence, 222 Park Street, Jacksonville, four months after the death of his wife.

James and Mary Fannie Filson married in 1892. They were the parents of four daughters. Harriet Filson Russel (1894-1896) died as a toddler. Agnes Scott Russel (1897-1976) and Emily Gallaher Russel, a Christian missionary, (1902-1971) never married. Catherine Filson Russel (1899-1968) married twice, but I do not know if there were any children.
