Emily served as a Christian missionary in China. Her mission trip ended when she was called home due to political unrest in China. Her father, James Gallaher Russel, was a Presbyterian minister in Illinois, Wisconsin, Nebraska, and Iowa. Her extended family lived for several generations in Jacksonville, Illinois.

Emily was the librarian from 1957-1969 at Covenant Theological Seminary in St. Louis, where there is a collection under her name in the PCA Historical Center.

Emily had two other sisters in addition to Harriet Filson Russel (1894-1896), who died as a young child. They are: Agnes Scott Russel (1897-1976), who never married, and Catherine Filson Russel (1899-1968), who was married twice. No information about her sisters is known at this point.
