Fred (Frederic Henri Gendreau Leonard) was born in Waterloo, Quebec but then the family moved to Sweetsburg, Quebec about 1880. He became a book-keeper and married Clara Ethel Ostrom July 18, 1905 in St. Patrick's church, Montreal. He enlisted in July 1916 with the 199th Bn, C.E.F. Irish Canadian Rangers and went overseas in December 1916. In 1917 he was transferred to the 14th Battalion Canadian Infantry, entered the theatre of war in May 1917. August 18, 1917 he was poisoned by gas at Lens, France. He was invalided back to Canada in 1918 and discharged in June of that year.
After the war he lived and worked in Montreal for a few years, then moved to Toronto. He passed away in the Christie Street Hospital (for veterans )in Toronto, of broncho pneumonia.
