Bertha Carrie Hurley, one of seven children of Samuel Francis and Flora Jane Cupples Aurand, was born on a farm near Hardy, Nebr., in Republic County, Kansas, on March 20, 1890. She grew up on the family farm and was educated at the Stover school.

She was married to James Hurley on February 16, 1910, at Belleville, Kansas. To this union three daughters were born. Her married life was spent near Hardy, where their children were raised. She moved to Superior in 1970. The farm was her way of life. She enjoyed the farm and gardening.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, who died on September 30, 1939, two of her (NOTE: Typed as written in newspaper.)

She is survived by her daughter, Kathaleen, and son-in-law, Cecil Blackstone, of Webber, Kansas; two sisters, Mrs. Edith Conzelman of Santa Ana, California and Mrs. Catherine Townsend of Hardy, Nebr.; her brother, Vern Aurand of Drexel, Missouri; and the friendship of other relatives and friends.

Her daughter cared for her through a lengthy illness until on November 28, 1976, she passed away at the Jewell County Hospital in Mankato, Kansas, at the age of 86 years, eight months and eight days. She was place to rest beside her husband in the Rosemound (sic) Cemetery.

Funeral services were held on December 1, 1976, from the Megrue-Price Funeral Chapel in Superior, Nebraska with Rev. Loren Silsby officiating.
