Alexandere was the son of David and Elizabeth (Bailey) Hawthorne. He married Francis Sophia (Pauley) in 1911 and they had five children: James David, Everett Kenneth, Mildred Elizabeth, Alexander Leonard and Mina Marie.

Alex Bailey Hawthorne, 73, of 1031 N. 24th St. died at home early Sunday morning of a heart condition. he was a retired mineworker.
Mr. Hawthorne was born April 10, 1887, in Scranton, Kan., a son of Mr. and Mrs. David Hawthorne. he came to Montana at an early age with his parents and the family settle in Red Lodge. After retiring from working in the coal mines of Bearcreek, he came to Billings in 1947.
He was one of the survivors of a 1943 mine disaster at Bearcreek in which 754 other miners, including his son, were killed.
On Feb. 23, 1911, he married Fannie Pauley in Billings.
He is survived by his wife; two sons, Everett K. of 609 1st St. W., and Alex L. of 1305 Avenue F; two daughters, Mrs. R. C. Jones of Burbank, Calif., and Mrs. Raymond Keyser of Ronan; three brothers, David of red Lodge, William of San Francisco and Leslie of Sierra Madre, calif., nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild. He was a member of Star in the West lodge No. 40, AF&AM at Red Lodge, and the United Mine Workers.
The body is at Michelotti-Sawyers Mortuary.
