George married Catherine (Cathie) Meiners, née Collins, on May 16, 1975, in Tulsa, Tulsa County, Oklahoma. George and Cathie have five children, all girls: Mary, 37 (Jason), Maggie, 35 (Jeff), Theresa, 34 (Stephan), Deborah, 31 (Luke), and Sarah, 18. George also has two children from a prior marriage to the late Ligia Ines Morales Munos de Harper: John Paul, 43 (Jennifer), and Inez, 42 (Stephen). George is survived by his wife Cathie, all his siblings and their spouses; his mother-in-law, Carol Collins; all his children; his 11 grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents; his father-in-law, Don Collins; and his brother-in-law, Tim Thompson.
A resident of De Pere for 29 years, George was very active in the community and, especially, in the Catholic Church. George was a founding member of Esto Vir, a Catholic men's group that touched the lives of 1,200 men with teachings of how to "Be a Man" in the Catholic faith. George was also a member of Opus Dei and attended Mass daily. For decades, George had been an avid Phantom fan as a member of a group of friends known as the "Bleacher Creatures." His cheering from the stands of West De Pere events will surely be missed.
George was an equally exemplary presence in his family. He provided a strong example to his children of selflessness, humility, and modesty. He took great pride in his children's achievements and was always there to provide support during tough times, dropping everything at a moment's notice. Known as the "Baby Whisperer," George was also an outstanding grandfather, always knowing how to keep a child happy, safe, and entertained. He was always the first person to soothe a cranky child.
Visitation for George will be held from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 21, 2013, at Ryan Funeral Home, 305 N. 10th Street in De Pere. Visitation will continue at 9:00 a.m. on Monday, July 22, 2013, at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in De Pere. A funeral Mass will follow, beginning at 10:30 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that well-wishers give donations in George's name to either the Children's Hospital of Wisconsin in Milwaukee, or American Family Children's Hospital in Madison.
