His great grandfather, William Hemming immigrated from England and married Sisson (Stephens) Hemming in Baltimore, Maryland.
Thomas's paternal grandfather, for whom he was named and also the firstborn son, settled in Bedford County while his parents and most of his siblings went on to settle in Northeastern Ohio.
On 7 Jan 1880, Thomas married Alice Jeannette Haney. They were married until his death a little more than 5 years later. During Thomas's life, he saw the birth of at least 4 of his children. He died while Alice was pregnant with their fifth child, Richard Thomas Heming. Richard was born about 6 months after his father's death.
Family mystery surrounds the cause of Thomas's death. Thomas's eldest son was told that his father died of pneumonia after a fall from a horse while he was out fox-hunting. However, in talking with a descendant of Thomas's brother, James Andrew Heming, the story that they were told was that he was murdered by a jealous husband whose wife Thomas was having an affair. Neither story has ever been confirmed.
