NOT NATIVE AMERICAN:
research about Mariah (Mollett) Spence 1869-1953

Short Answer
Mariah is NOT Native American, not even a small percentage according to multiple DNA tests. Just because we have a family story, doesn't make it true.

Long Answer
Just a heads up for everyone: the Native American photo from the Smithsonian James Mooney collection that everyone is attaching to their Mariah Mollett genealogy page is definitely NOT a photo of Mariah and Mariah was NOT Native American. This has been confirmed by multiple DNA tests of multiple direct descendants, both female and male.

Besides the DNA evidence of Mariah not being even slightly Native American, the photo(s) that everyone is attaching to their profile of her is definitely incorrect. That incorrect photo is a 1888 photo of an unnamed Cherokee woman pulled from the Internet, specifically the James Mooney photo collection on the Smithsonian Institution website. This photo is also used on many different sites such as Pinterest and none of them are identified as Mariah. The most common caption for this photo is "Cherokee woman, 1888". Whoever originally used this as their Ancestry.com profile photo was probably just using it as a "placeholder" photo based on family stories.

Also, multiple confirmed descendants have taken DNA tests (AncestryDNA, 23andMe, MyHeritage, Family Tree DNA, LivingDNA, etc.) and none have come back with any Native American ancestry (not even a small percentage).

We had that same story in our family about her being Native American. However, after researching the photo and finding its origin and DNA testing of multiple direct descendants (multiple family members both female & male), I'm confident that she was definitely NOT Native American and the photo is definitely not Mariah Mollett.

Again, this is NOT a photo of Mariah and she definitely wasn't Native American according to multiple DNA tests (not even a small percentage).

UPDATE: 23 MAY 2020 - FOUND SOURCE OF "INCORRECT MARIAH" PHOTOS

As stated previously, this is NOT a photo of Mariah and I have now found the "source" of this incorrect photo and where the photo was taken which proves this is not Mariah (Mollett) Spence.

This "incorrect Mariah" photo was taken in the "Qualla Boundary" in western North Carolina and originates from the James Mooney photo collection on the Smithsonian Learning Lab website. Here are the direct links:

These 2 photos were almost certainly taken in the "Qualla Boundary" in western North Carolina which is located between Knoxville, TN and Asheville, NC in the Oconaluftee River Valley. You can learn about it here:

MORE INFORMATION ABOUT JAMES MOONEY

James Mooney was in this area of North Carolina between 1887 and 1890. He was an American ethnographer that worked for the Bureau of American Ethnology. You can learn more about him here:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Mooney

https://www.smokymountainnews.com/archives/item/15280-james-mooney-s-devotion-to-wnc

These 2 photos from the James Mooney photo collection on the Smithsonian Learning Lab website are of a Cherokee woman in the Oconaluftee River Valley of North Carolina by James Mooney (or someone working with him) in 1888. Many of James Mooney's photos can be seen here:

https://learninglab.si.edu/search/?f%5B_types%5D%5B%5D=resource&st=Mooney,%20James&s=&page=1
- currently photo #1 is on pg 43 and photo #2 is on pg 18.

Since this is clearly NOT a photo of Mariah, I suggest completely deleting the photo for 2 reasons:

1. This is clearly not a photo of Mariah so the information is factually incorrect.

2. It is not only misleading to our other family genealogists but disrespectful to the Cherokee in general to misrepresent this photo as Mariah Mollett when it definitely is not.

=============================================

Mariah Mollett was born on 19 Feb 1869 in Martin County, Kentucky. Her father James "Bay" Mollett abt.1814–bef.1900 was 55 and her mother Phoebe Jane Music 1839–1922 was 30 when she was born. She married Samuel Spence 1855–1942 on 07 Feb 1886 in Martin County, Kentucky. They had nine children in 24 years. She died on 13 Jan 1953 in Tomahawk, Martin County, Kentucky at the age of 83 and was buried at Spence Cemetery on Orville Spence Road.

NOTE ON YEAR OF BIRTH
Virtually all of her records point to 1869 for her year of birth not 1867. The only recorded instance of 1867 is written "1867(?)" on her death certificate by the informant, Ralph S. Mollett 1875-1964, most likely her brother. Ralph was unsure so a question mark was added.

The 1870, 1880, 1910, 1920, 1930 and 1940 census records all point to 1869, while the 1900 census lists around 1872 (which is certainly incorrect since she was listed as 1 year old in the 1870 census). The Kentucky Death Index, 1911-2000 points to 1868, but that is the only record that does.
