Samuel W. Spence 1861–1942
Birth 18 MAR 1861 • Paint Lick Mountain, Tazewell County, Virginia, USA
Death 27 FEB 1942 • Tomahawk, Martin County, Kentucky, USA
- According to family stories, he shot & killed another man in Virginia and the family fled to Kentucky.
- According to family stories, his father, James Spence, supposedly owned land in the "Scioto River bottoms" early on (assume to be in Scioto County, Ohio, but could have been in Lawrence County).
- Again, according to family stories, his mother, Anna (Sawyer) Spence is supposedly buried in Buckeye Hill Cemetery, Franklin Furnace, Scioto County, Ohio.

NOTES ABOUT 1900 CENSUS

- Minnie Leona Spence is missing from the 1900 census unless she is the "Bathela" entry (name is difficult to read). However, if she is "Bathela" (which is probably transcribed incorrectly as well), that person is listed as age 11 and a DOB as July 1888. Minnie's year of birth is typically listed as 1894 (death certificate) or 1898 (headstone; headstone date is most likely incorrect since she was married in 1909).

- Her brother Sherman might be listed as "William" in the 1900 census. His full name might have been "William Sherman" for the famous general.

- the 1900 census entry for a "Jenie" (would be the oldest child) actually might be spelled "James" for James Ralph "Sonny" Spence.

1900 census household entry
- Jenie Spence (oldest child in household).
- Minnie is still living with parents.
- listed age 14, DOB listed as Jan 1888.
- residence: Stafford Fork, Martin, Kentucky.

- In the 1900 census, the entry for "Jenie" might actually be "James". This could be James Ralph ("Sonny/Sonnie") that has been incorrectly labeled as a daughter. This person is basically the same age as James and James should be around age 14 and still living with his parents, but I can't find him in the census records until he is married in the 1910 census to Martha Perry. Also, I cannot find a daughter named "Jenie" (or whatever the name actually is) of Samuel Spence and Mariah Mollett.
