Joan Evans Brown, 88, of Lewiston, died of congestive heart failure Wednesday, Oct. 4, 2000, at Royal Plaza Care Center in Lewiston.
She was born July 13, 1912, at Carmangay, Alberta, Canada, to John and Mabel Evans. The Evans family were area pioneers. The family first came to Genesee in 1872 and moved to Lewiston in the late 1870s.
Joan moved from Canada in 1922 to the Evans fruit ranch at Wilma, Wash., on the Snake River where the Port of Wilma is now located. She attended the one-room school at Wilma and later came across the river by rowboat to attend the old Whitman Grade School in downtown Lewiston on Idaho Street. She graduated from Lewiston High School in 1931.
After high school, she worked for her father at the Pepsi-Cola plant in North Lewiston, which the Evans' partly owned.
On June 6, 1934, she was married to Shelton Wagner at Lewiston. As a farm wife, she helped cook for the harvest crews at the Wagner Ranch. The marriage ended in divorce.
She and C.W. (Jack) Brown were married Oct. 29, 1949, in Lewiston. He died on May 22, 1974.
Grandma Brown dearly loved her family. She never forgot them on birthdays or other special occasions. She was a wonderful cook and baked delicious pies and cakes for the family. She also knitted beautiful things for friends and family and won many awards at the Asotin County Fair.
Canning the bounty from her husband Jack's garden was hard work that she enjoyed. She was a member of the Lewiston Eagles Auxiliary, Ladies of the Elks, the Nez Perce County Historical Society and Grace Lutheran Church at Lewiston.
Her survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Dick Riggs of Lewiston; granddaughter Jolyn and Ed Dahmen of Clarkston; grandsons, Doug and Laurinda Riggs of Lewiston and Matt and Leah Riggs of Bremerton, Wash.; and great-grandchildren, Zach and Joel Dahmen and Moira Riggs.
She was preceded in death by her sister, Wilma Campbell.
The family suggests memorials be made to Grace Lutheran Church, 3434 Sixth St., Lewiston, or to the Nez Perce County Historical Society, 0306 Third St. Lewisto
