Elijah "Eli" Pace was born on October 10, 1836, in Bevil District, Republic of Texas, to Hardy Allen and Mahala Isaacks Pace. Eli was sixth of fifteen children and his siblings were Eliza, Elizabeth, Sarah, Matilda, James B., Mary Ann, Hiram, Hardy Allen, Mahala Ann, Minerva Virginia, John, Rebecca Ethel, Amanda and Nancy Pace.

On January 3, 1856, Eli married Nancy Henderson. In the 1860 Census, Eli and Nancy were living next to his father, Hardy, and brother Hiram. They were all farmers and his real estate was worth $1,000.00. Together Eli and Nancy had six children and they were Hardy Allen, John L., Margaret, Alexander R., Nancy Jane and Charles Henderson Pace.


Eli and Nancy had to bury three of their children, Alexander, 1888, Nancy, 1884 and Charles in 1888. On October, 19, 1895, Eli had to bury his dear wife, Nancy. Twenty-eight years later, Elijah Pace passed away.

Eli was a Citizen of the Texas Republic and fought in the Civil War on the Confederate side. Eli enlisted in the Confederate Army in May 1862 to the close of the war. He was a Private in Company G, 13th Regiment, Texas Cavalry. On May 26, 1865, he surrendered and on August 1865 was paroled in the field.
