Ernest Frederick Fennig, 90, of Berne, IN, passed away on July 8, 2012. He was born on November 25, 1921 in Berne to Charles Frederick and Cora Yoss Fennig. He was valedictorian of the class of 1940 at Hartford High School and graduated in engineering from Tri-State College in 1943 as president of the senior class. During World War II, he served in the Army Corps of Engineers and was assigned to the Manhattan Project, working at a physics lab at Columbia University and later at the Y12 Complex in Oak Ridge, TN. Following the war, he worked for Western-Electric in New York City and Allentown, PA. He married Florine Rosina Steury on August 6, 1950 at First Missionary Church, Berne. Together they lived in Indianapolis, where they were members of Hope Church and Castleview Baptist Church. He worked as a mechanical engineer at the architect firm of Allen & Kelley. In 1965, he started his own engineering firm, Fennig & Weir, retiring in 1994. 60-year residents of Indianapolis, the Fennigs moved back to Berne in 2010. He is survived by his wife Florine Fennig, sister Corene Steury, brother Brice Fennig, sons Jeffrey Fennig (Paula) and Joel Fennig, and 7 grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents, brothers Leon & Martel Fennig, and sons George Mitchell and Dr. John Fennig. Visitation will be on Wednesday, July 11 from 4-7 p.m. and the memorial service at 11 a.m. on Thursday, July 12th, both at Swiss Village, 1350 W. Main St., Berne, IN.
