He earned his B.A. in Biology from Indiana University in 1974 and medical degree from Indiana University School of Medicine in 1978, with a medical residency in Internal Medicine at St. Louis University Hospital. He spent two months of medical school training during the summer of 1978, at Tenwek Hospital in Kenya, serving under his uncle, Dr. Ernest Steury. Dr. Fennig had over 14 years of experience in Internal Medicine clinical practice in Indianapolis and served as Medical Director in Indianapolis for Metro Health, Key Health Plan, and Methodist Hospital. He served as Network Medical Director of Indiana Aetna Healthcare and Medical Director for Parkview Health (Ft. Wayne), Centene Corporation (St Louis), and Managed Health Services of Indiana. He was currently at Hoosier Alliance MDWise of Indianapolis. He was a member of the American College of Physician Executives. He was an avid fan of IU basketball and Atlanta Braves baseball.
He is survived by his wife Julie; daughter, Hope; daughter, Vanessa Voigt of San Diego; son, Nicholas Fennig of Philadelphia, and son, Patrick Fennig of New York; parents, Ernie and Flo Fennig of Indianapolis; brother, Joel Fennig of Indianapolis, and Jeff Fennig of Pittsburgh.
