Fitch Chipman was born in Pawlet, Rutland Co. Vermont in 1785. He was the second child of Lemuel Chipman M.D., and Asenath (Sinai) Fitch. Lemuel Chipman acted as assistant surgeon for the Continental Army at the Battle of Bennington in August 1777. He was a member of the Vermont Legislature 1788-1793, an Assistant Judge of Rutland County Court 1788-1793 and a member of the convention that adopted the Vermont Constitution in 1793. Brothers of Lemuel and uncles of Fitch included: Nathaniel Chipman (1752-1843)

and
Daniel Chipman (1765-1850).

Fitch Chipman graduated from Middlebury College in 1808 and married on May 21 of the same year to his cousin Sarah Spafford, daughter of Job and Hannah (Chipman) Spafford. He resided in Sheldon, New York and later Unadilla, Michigan. Fitch and Sarah Chipman had eight children. They were:

Fitch Chipman died Jan. 15, 1864 in Unadilla, Michigan. He is buried in Plainfield Cemetery, Livingston Co. Michigan.
