Robert Cunningham died at his residence in Benton township, Sunday morning March 29th, 1885, in his 80th year, after a lingering illness of several months. "Uncle Bob," as he was familiarly called, came to Knox county about 35 years ago, and has resided at or near the place of his decease continuously until now, having been in his life a very successful farmer. During the late war he was noted for his uncompromising union views, and was quite active in aid of the militia forces at that time, and on several occasions shouldered his gun and helped to drive bushwhackers out of the county, and on one occasion had a son killed, and himself wounded in the hand while defending his household from an attack of Ewing's bushwhackers. He was also registering officer during the war. He was an active and energetic man, and materially aided in developing our county in every way. A large concourse of relatives and friends followed his remains to their last resting place in the family Cemetery on Monday the 30th inst.
