Shakir A. Abbas - Born: 13 November 1926 in Baghdad, Iraq. Died: 10 May 2012 in Winter Park, FL.

Predeceased by daughter Cindy Patton Abbas and wife Virginia Patton Abbas. Survived by daughters Miriam Engle and Kathleen Abbas, and son William Abbas.

Dr. Abbas received a B.Sc. in Electrical Engineering, 1949, from Birmingham University, England; an M.S. and Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, 1955 and 1958, Carnegie Institute of Technology, Pittsburgh, PA.

He married Virginia Patton in 1956.

He worked as a Professor of Engineering at Baghdad University, South Dakota School of Mines and Technology, and at the University of Florida at Gainesville.

In addition, he was a long-time engineer and researcher at IBM in East Fishkill, NY, where he was responsible for numerous patents related to integrated circuits. He also served on the Research staff of the Semiconductor Research Corporation in Research Triangle Park, NC.

Dr. Abbas received a heart transplant at Shands Hospital, Gainesville, in 1993, and was one of their longest-surviving heart transplant patients.

He was an avid tennis player and fan.

He will be missed.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, May 15, 2012 at the Milam Funeral Home Chapel in Newberry at 11:00 am, with the family receiving friends for one hour prior to service. Interment will take place in Newberry Cemetery. Arrangements are under the care of MILAM FUNERAL AND CREMATION SERVICES, 22405 W. NEWBERRY RD, NEWBERRY, FL 32669. 352-472-5361
