VETERAN LAWYER DIED MONDAY AFTER LONG ILLNESS
B.L. Abbott, Once Mayor and for Fifteen Years Elected Justice of the Peace Passed Away from Paralysis and Stomach Trouble---Funeral Tuesday Afternoon

B.L. Abbott, well-known in this city as a justice of the peace; and office which he held for years, died at his home on the corner of Enterprise and Merry avenue at 1 o'clock Monday morning. He has long been a sufferer from paralysis and stomach trouble. The funeral was conducted from the house Tuesday afternoon at two 0'clock. Burial followed in Oak grove cemetery.

B.L. Abbott was born in Townsend township, Huron county, July 5, 1850. His father, James R. Abbott was a Baptist minister. He preached at Reading, Michigan, for seven years after which he came to grand Rapids where his active work was cut short by a stroke of paralysis. He lived for twelve years at the home of his son B.L. Abbott in this city.

In his youth Mr. Abbott acquired a knowledge of vocal music which served him well and also made him a very popular person with the young people. In 1871 he came to Bowling Green and studied law with an uncle, Philander S. Abbott. He had intended to go to Michigan to take a law course in some good school but the illness of his father prevented and he had to go to work in order to help support the family. In this emergency he resorted to the teaching of vocal music.

In 1876 he married Miss Mary L. Marshall and then he resumed his study of law and was admitted to the bar in 1878. He then began his practice with Edson Golt, a former teacher. They remained in partnership until Mr. Golt's death dissolved it. In politics Mr. Abbott has always been an ardent Republican. He was at one time elected mayor of this city and for fifteen consecutive years served as a justice of the peace. He did not confine his time and efforts to law alone, and one day surprised his friends by introducing a new discovery for the prevention of baldness.

During recent years Mr.Abbott has not been in good health. Some time ago he suffered a stroke of paralysis similar to that which affected his father. He has been gradually failing ever since.
