Gertrude Haley, widow of the judge murdered in a famed shootout and attempted jailbreak at the Marin County Civic Center in 1970, has died.

She was 98 and died Wednesday of old age, said her niece, Maureen Thomas.

Mrs. Haley was the daughter of a pioneering Marin railroad engineer, James "The Bullet" Ahern. She lived in San Rafael for most of her life.

She married a classmate from San Rafael High School, Harold J. Haley. He later served as San Rafael city attorney, prosecutor in the Marin County district attorney's office and finally a Marin Superior Court judge. The couple had three daughters.
