Son of Robert and Mary (Quince) Laverty, both born in Ireland.

In 1841, he married Mary Ann Bonner (1822- 1881), daughter of Daniel and Margaret.

From the "Worcester Daily Spy," 24 April 1886:
Death of John Laverty.
John Laverty, the well known politician of ward five, and for 56 years a resident in Worcester, died yesterday morning at his residence, No. 22 Lodi street, aged 65 years and 10 months.
He had been in failing health for about three months, and had been confined to the house since last Monday.
His original trade, as was that of his father and several of his brothers, was that of a shoemaker, but of late years he had followed other occupations.
He is well remembered for his prominence in the ward meetings, where he had formerly exercised great influence, his stentorian voice being always heard on voting days, as well as at the caucus meetings of his party.

He was well informed on all matters coming under his observation or reading.
He was one of the earliest singers in the choir of St. John's Church, and he was an active and prominent member of the different Irish societies.
The deceased was of Scotch as well as Irish parentage.
He was born in Glasgow, Scotland, June 24, 1820, from which place his father, the late Robert Laverty, senior, came to this country in 1829, with his three oldest sons, including John and his brother, Robert F., landing first in New York city, and the following year coming to Worcester by way of Boston and New Hampshire.

John Laverty's mother, Mary Squince (sic), was born in Boston, her father being an English officer, who was wounded at the battle of Bunker Hill, in June 1775, and her mother being of Scottish origin.
After the battle of Bunker Hill, the family returned to Scotland, where Mary Squince afterwards married Robert Laverty, in Glasgow.
The later had nine other children after coming to this country, born in Worcester or vicinity, making nine sons and three daughters, of whom four sons and two daughters are now living.
The late John Laverty has also had twelve children, six sons and six daughters, of whom three sons and four daughters are living in this city, all married, and he leaves 21 grandchildren....
