Thomas F. Adams travelled from Maine to Kansas in his 82 years. He arrived in Switzerland County, Indiana, prior to his 1847 marriage to Lucy Cole. Their first of 6 children, Leora, was born in 1847, and their last, Charley, in 1859 (the same year as Lucy's death). Thomas married Melissa Downey in 1859, who died while he fought with the Indiana Infantry of the Union Army in the Civil War. He returned to Switzerland County following his discharge in 1864 and married his third wife, Rebecca Dickinson, in 1864. Thomas and Rebecca had 6 more children in Switzerland County between 1866 and 1878. They left Indiana in 1884 and moved to Kansas, settling on farm land west of Wichita. All 6 children went with them. By the 1900 census, Thomas was 78 years old and had turned the farm over to his son Sylvester. Rebecca died the year of the census and was buried in a local cemetery. Thomas died in 1906 and was buried next to her.
