Newton J. Adams was from a long line of Adamses who arrived in Maine. He was born in Switzerland County, Indiana in 1857 to Thomas F. Adams and Lucy (Cole) Adams. He married Nettie Gibbs in Switzerland County in 1878, and the first of seven children was born the same year. Newton was a farmer and moved across the Ohio River to Carroll County Kentucky in about 1900. Newton died in 1905, as did his daughter Bertha. Both were buried locally in the Ghent Masonic Cemetery.
