Al was born on May 24, 1929 in Garden City, Kansas, the son of Vincent Conrad Herman and Susan Rose Brungardt Herman. He was one of 10 children, 4 boys and 6 girls, and grew up in a German settlement in Kansas. Al worked on the family farm where he learned how to work.
Following the Depression, he and his family moved to Idaho and settled in Idaho Falls for a few years and finally moved to Twin Falls in 1946. Al worked for the Twin Falls Highway District all of his career. He remembers always getting up before dawn to get ready for work. He continued this all of his life, even after retiring from the Highway District.
Following his retirement, Al worked part-time for Albertson's and then at McDonald's. He had to stop working at McDonald's this past year due to declining health.
Al enjoyed fishing, going on long drives with his sweetheart, Janet, his coffee and loved visiting with family and friends. He was a lifelong member of the Catholic Church. Al was a gentle giant, with a soft voice, twinkling eyes and a gentle smile. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.
Al is survived by his wife, Janet Herman; his sons, Mike (Loni), Kenneth and Rod (Laurie); his daughters, Diane, Judy, Theresa, Tonette (Gary), Yvonne (Fernando) and Susan (Gary); his sisters, Mary Beth, Theresa, Mary and Bertha; his grandsons, Jimmy (Valerie), Jim (Christie), Bryan, Nick, Craig (Tiffany), Robert, Gary (Christina), Weston (Shannon) and Tylor; his granddaughters, Margaret (Allan), Adrienne (Mike), Nicole, DeJean, DeAnna (Travis), DeAaron, Tangela (Jon) and Anna; as well as 26 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by parents, Vincent and Susan Herman; his brothers, Martin, Matthew and Frank; his sisters, Cerona and Rose; and his son, Glenn.
A celebration of Al's life will be held as a graveside service at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, may 4, 2013 at Sunset Memorial Park with Deacon John Hurley of St. Edwards Catholic Church officiating. At Al's request there will be no viewing and services are under the direction of Trent Stimpson and staff at White Mortuary, Chapel by the Park, Twin Falls.
