Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Kniffen, 86, widow of the late Alonzo Kniffen, who died on Feb. 10, 1927, passed away at her home on Excelsior Avenue, Saturday morning, May 18.
Mrs. Kniffen was born at High Falls, N.Y., on October 30, 1859, the second eldest of a family of thirteen children, of the late Thomas and Amanda Silkworth Clearwater. She came to New Paltz at he age of fifteen and has lived here ever since, having been employed in the homes of some of the earlier settlers until the time of her marriage to Mr. Kniffen on Dec. 25, 1877, which took place at Modena.
She was a member of the New Paltz Reformed Church. Survivors are three sons, Edward and Webb of New Paltz and Walter of Milford. One brother, Asa Clearwater, of High Falls. Twelve grandchildren, twenty great grand children and one great great grandchild.
Funeral services were held from the V.T. Pine and son Funeral Home on Tuesday at three p.m. with the Rev. John Dysktra, of Gardiner officiating. Bearers were Frank Gulnac, Lloyd Smith, M. Petersen and E.D.Gerald. Burial was in the New Paltz Rural Cemetery. Floral tributes were many and beautiful.
