Jacob Strawn Brown was born 1/31/1852 in Morgan County, Illinois to Jubal and Mary Ann (Wing) Brown. Had 3 older brothers, 2 older sisters, and a younger sister. They are: Franklin Brown, John M Brown b.1842, Pamelia (Brown)Stringfield b.1845, Calahill Brown b.1847, Rebecca Brown b.1849, Phoebe Alice (Brown) Coe b.1858.

In 1860 he stayed with a family friend in Rock Creek, Kansas while his parents relocated to Richardson Co., Nebraska. By 1870 he was back with his folks and working on the farm. In 1878 his folks moved to Rio La Plata (Hesperus, La Plata, CO. That same here he married Eliza Jane Campbell. During this time he learned the railroad industry and began working on the railroads. He and his young family followed the Oregon Trail and ended up in Forest Grove, Oregon.

While in Forest Grove, Oregon he was working long hours and physically taxing his body. He and 1200+ individuals contracted the flu during a massive Russian influenza pandemic outbreak. He did not make it. Many were buried in mass graves and Jacob was also thought to have been buried in a mass grave until recently. He was buried across the border where his wife and children were living in rural Shasta County, California. It is a small cemetery on private property called "Brown Cemetery."
